These are performances you could only get from great talents early in their careers. They are so alive and vulnerable my wife and I literally forgot we were watching a movie. You cry, hurt and laugh with them in ways you just never will with a "star" driven and laden movie.
Knowing it's content and that it was a low-budget labor of love, I had very modest expectations. There are two stellar performances from Chris Marquette and Rumer Willis that carry the film. Two strangers (Rumer Willis & Chris Marquette), each living at the edges of society, are fatefully united for a harrowing and inspirational journey through the enchanting vistas of New Mexico. A passionate young woman escaping her abusive past, and a reclusive young man with Autism, take a journey that redefines the notion of family. He is socially awkward and a slave to pattern and routine, but a master of map-making and directions. Their journey teaches Maya to care for someone else and takes Duncan into a new world. Their road trip is filled with unexpected surprises and hard realities that redefine the notion of family. Having read the reviews on IMDb.com, I can only conclude that Rumer Willis has a team of bloggers working for her.
I haven't seen many films that can pull that breadth of responses from me. This is really the kind of film aimed at the heart, not at the box-office or cash box. While it's not perfect it is pure INDY expression at it's near best. Despite generally solid performances, this 'Rain Man' redux is too contrived to achieve the earnest emotions it's aiming for. They won't be able to see your review if you only submit your rating.

I prefer films that feature characters that are complicated in some way, as I think people in general are more interesting when they are complex. And not the sort of shallow complexity that you find in many films these days, but true life experience driven complexity. The characters in this film had so much richness and depth and I related to them in different ways. She is a screwed up singer headed to LA and he an autistic soul, who come together in an odd way and grow individually and jointly.
Her performance particular the detox scene really makes you think how far just a little bit of kindness can go and how everyone needs someone to stand up for them. One of the best scenes that I have ever seen in any movie is the one that takes place between Rumer and Veronica Cartright. I can't wait to see this movie again and again. The viewer travels with the characters and experiences what is around each corner as they do.

Chris Marquette just could not have done better with his very intricate/lovable character. One of my favorite performances was portrayed by Veronica Cartwright towards the very end of the film. All the performances were at the level they should have been. The Odd Way Home shows us the journey of Maya, a damaged young singer and Duncan, a sheltered young man, from hostile strangers to family. In one of the best scenes in the film, the two talk about how the desert was once the sea floor as they drive through the night. As if they are traveling through an alternate universe, what looks like snow shimmers past the windows.
In conclusion, if you like all things Rumer, you may well like this. I know a lot of people probably think that sounds crazy, but we love it. We’re together all day every day and we are just living our best married life. I feel like we’re back in the honeymoon phase again! “Rain Man” casts a long shadow that “The Odd Way Home” doesn’t do enough to wriggle out from under, even if its leading characters’ very similar dynamic takes place somewhat further down the economic ladder. Still, its essential contrivance works against the earnest emotions it’s aiming for, resulting in a less-than-special specialty item likely to do better in ancillary than in bigscreen release.
The Odd Way Home is a film that tells the gripping story of a young woman dealing with her lot in life often having made bad decisions along her path. It touches on something that almost every young adult and adult can relate to; this one included. It was beautifully written and expertly executed. This film was, by far, the best film I saw at the Austin Film Festival. The storyline left me laughing one minute and crying the next, and the performances by the two leads-- especially Marquette-- are Oscar worthy.
I hope this is part one of this story because I hated to see it end. Rumer's portrayal of damaged young woman, Maya, reminded me of a performance we might have seen from Kristen Stewart, save for a couple of actions that could have been clearer. But, overall, she was breathtaking in this role. Sexton brings relaxed warmth to an underwritten part. Still, the pic’s small scale, tight focus and generally low-key tenor lend it an attractive modesty that succeeds in tamping down the more melodramatic moments. Initially blase about his changed situation, he freaks out sufficiently upon grasping it that Maya drives him back home.

Getting no answer at the door, Maya realizes what Duncan hasn’t yet, that Grandma has expired. Figuring she might as well help herself, she empties the woman’s purse, taking her money and car keys. But upon hitting the road again, now behind the wheel of an old delivery truck, she discovers Duncan asleep in the rear compartment he’s turned into a bedroom. The acting seemed effortless, and was extremely spot-on. Maya was a very sharp, natural, and empathetic character played by Rumer Willis.
